POLICE ARREST TWO, CONFISCATE DONKEY MEAT IN LIMURU
Donkey Rights Group and Police in Limuru yesterday confiscated hundreds of kilograms of meat from 35 donkeys that they discovered being slaughtered at Ndeiya village. This came after villagers had reportedly complained of donkey theft and remains of their animals left in bushes. It took courage and effort from the villagers and special collaboration from police dept in the County to execute this mission at early in the morning.
They arrested two suspects while the rest fled leaving the meat and a van at the scene during the 2am incident. Police suspected that the meat was destined to different unknown hotels and restaurants in Nairobi.
The head of late night mission Area deputy police chief said the donkeys were brought in a lorry to a tree plantation where they were slaughtered by about 30 men. She said her office acted on a public tip-off through local Donkeys Activists and together with the police managed to arrest two people. “When we arrived, a lot of them run in different directions but we were lucky to arrest the two.
The Area deputy police chief said after discussions with public health officers in the area and other stake holders, they decided to destroy the meat by burning it.
We have done check-ups with our health officers and ascertained that the meat is not sold here. If we fight the illegal traders and don’t get support from where it is being taken to, the cycle is not complete,” she said, adding that it is important for health officers in Nairobi and others areas where this trade is going on to assist and inspect eateries to deny donkey meat merchants a market.
